Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become starving," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
