India's capital Rises to Hazardous Haze Post Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of the city recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which equals 10x the safe limit recommended by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to 15-20x above healthy limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Developments

For the past four years, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that engulfs the capital as colder weather sets in.

However earlier this year, the current local leadership petitioned the judicial authority to propose a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, the court approved the request, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi recorded contamination spiking around the night hours to some of the worst levels seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe readings of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous particles in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Pollution Sources

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the capital as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple investigations.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 early fatalities per year in the capital.
