The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer vision.
The president stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
This announcement follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the entire content from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and reimagined the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The belief in this project grows every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Lead of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting him next week. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President
Brinkman currently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an thrilling step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Challenge the opponents with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is yours."
The game lacks an official launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as creation advances.
